Gout is an important type of arthritis, characterized by sudden, burning pain along with inflammation, swelling, redness and stiffness in the affected joints and the area surrounding it. It is caused due to improper metabolism of uric acid in the body. Uric acid is produced as a byproduct of purine metabolism. Purines are organic compounds, which are either generated by the body naturally or ingested as food.

There is high uric acid level in blood (hyperuricemia) and buildup of uric acid (monosodium urate) crystals, particularly in the joints and its surrounding tissues in a gout patient. Gout is more common among males than females. In general, gout mostly affects the big toe; however, there are chances of affecting to other parts of the body.

Treatment of gout is usually done by taking medication and proper exercise. Certain home remedies can be followed for treatment of gout. Let’s see some of the important home remedies, which can certainly help in reducing the joint pain resulting from a gout attack.

Since purine is responsible for the overproduction of uric acid, consuming low purine diets is an important step in the treatment of gout. Diet should contain green leafy vegetables and dairy products.

A gout patient should avoid having purine-rich diets such as red meat, organ meat, seafood and alcoholic beverages such as beer, whiskey and wines. There are certain diets for gout patients, which one can follow. The overall diet should contain high carbohydrates and low protein and fats.

Studies have proved that cherries contain chemicals that reduce the amount of uric acid level in blood. Thus, consuming cherries either fruits or juices helps in reducing inflammation. Also, strawberries are found to have the same effect as other dark berries.

Another home remedy includes consumption of safflower that has certain significant properties for reducing pain. One can have safflower capsules that are available in the market. Alfalfa, which is a rich source of minerals is found to lower the amount of uric acid in blood.

Lemon juice is an important source of vitamin C that can help in dissolving uric acid crystals. Regular drinking of lemon juice can help in treatment of gout. A patient of gout should drink ample amount of water, fruit juices and other healthy drinks in order to help the body in flushing out the excess uric acid, which in turn will help to prevent further deposition of uric acid.

One of the ways to get relief from gout attacks of the toes is soaking the affected foot in a solution containing ginger root paste and water. Mix one-third cup of ground ginger in a little amount of water and soak your foot for 30 minutes. Wash your foot gently after soaking. This will reduce the pain in the toes.

Gout should be treated soon after its diagnosis under the supervision of a qualified physician. If it remains untreated for a longer period, there are chances of other health complications such as high blood pressure, joint deformation, kidney stones, and kidney failure in severe cases and even death.
